It was a sketchy, dirty alleyway with a courtyard. There was a retail space at the end of the alleyway but it had been vacant for years. Within four months I transformed it into Ontario's only art alley. In January 2020, just before Covid, I opened our second location on Brock Street. It was an artist collective that closed suddenly. Within a month I reopened it as a retro-Ontario themed art collective and named it Martello On Brock. One thing that is unique is that we don't have employees; we are a collective and everyone who works at the galleries is an artist. They staff the galleries in return for a low gallery fee. The number of staff is variable and has fluctuated from approximately fifteen two five now, due to issues around Covid. This is very much a family business. My wife, a teacher who is now retired, plays a major role in arranging the art and also managing stock. We have four children who help out at times, especially during special events such as Froid'Art/Art on Ice. I couldn't manage the galleries or do the events without them. They are a very creative and industrious bunch, and I am always so surprised and delighted to see the various projects and ventures they undertake. What is one of your favorite products you offer? There are so many unique and special items that it's hard to make a choice. Everything we sell is locally-made. One thing that has been a big hit has been our plague doctor ornament. It's a bit on the morbid side, but is a great souvenir of the times we are going through. What made you choose to get into the business you are in? I have lived in Kingston and been a downtown fan all my life, and had been creating art as a hobby ever since I was in high school. I also love Quebec City with its narrow streets, colourful buildings and old-world charm. It also has the famous art alleyway called la Rue du Trésor. We have so many alleyways in Kingston, but no art alley. I had always wanted my own gallery, but I wanted it to be different. When I saw the vacant space on Wellington Street I thought that it would be the ideal spot to create in the courtyard with an art alley leading up to a French Canadian fishing village. What do you love about Kingston? Kingston has so much to offer: a beautiful shoreline, historic buildings, top-rated educational institutions, a steady stream of tourists year-round. It has a lot of alleyways which are our real untapped hidden gems. People love exploring alleyways. Only three have been developed into something that tourists or locals would want to see. The rest, approximately a dozen in the downtown core, are sitting there, waiting to be transformed into art spaces and/or lively little patios. What do you love most about your industry? As a member of the artist community I feel very privileged and fortunate to play a role in the culture of our community. The city, the public and our visitors clearly value the contribution that the arts make to the economic well-being as well as the mental health of the citizens of our city. As an artist, I get to do what I really love: push the limits of creativity. My favourite project, the one that gets the most attention apart from Martello Alley, is Froid'Art, which I started in 2015. Basically, it is a winter ice art show. Art is painted on plexiglass, then frozen in 300 lb blocks of crystal clear ice in Hensall, Ontario. The blocks are delivered to Kingston and placed around town. They glow at night because they are lit underneath using rope lights. This year, due to Covid restrictions, we could not hold the event in person so we pivoted to a virtual event where two blocks were frozen with a special projection . We placed the blocks at each location, projected an image, and photographed with regular and 360 cameras. Creations By Tracy offers custom hems on garments, outdoor clothing, teamwear, school / work uniforms, drapery & even linens. Although Tracy Shepard learned to sew by her Mom's side as a youngster, they exchanged roles when her Mom became Tracy’s best support staff, a role she played for over 25 years. Now retired at 87, her Mom no longer sews & Tracy holds down the fort alone. Specializing in hemming as opposed to full alterations allows Tracy to manage a higher volume and faster turnaround for what clients need most. A residential move to Kingston in 2016 was an exciting chance to relocate the business to what Tracy describes as “a fabulously welcoming city”. Total Diva turned 6 years old as of June 30, 2022. It sounds like a cliche, but it really does feel like it was yesterday much of the time. And other days, of course, after over two decades in the beauty industry it feels like I’ve never done anything else. How many employees do you have? Total Diva generally has 10 employees, a mix of full and part time. I say generally because there’s always a little flux in numbers with placement students coming and going and we generally try to make sure they all get some paid shifts while they’re with us. Half of the staff have been here since day one. Is this a family business – chat about the family/traditions/vision etc? Fam biz. Well, I have been in it since I was 17 so it certainly feels like a family business. We also work amongst a team that's like family, and treat them as such. What is one of your favorite products you offer? Favourite service … we love it all! From waxing to hair to lashes … they are all our favs. We’re known as the best in town for Brazilian waxes. What made you choose to get into the business you are in? I fell into the industry as a high school co-op placement and 27 years later, I’m still here. Over the last few days we have had the opportunity to be on a trip with the Rocky Mountaineer, a luxurious train experience from Jasper, Alberta, with stops in Quesnel, BC, Whistler BC and with a final destination of Vancouver BC. We thought we would do something a little different, and feature the Company that provided us with a wonderful experience. We started bright and early in Jasper, Alberta. No need to worry about our luggage as they come to pick it up at the hotel and transport it, separately from the train, to the next destination where you find it in your room upon arrival. The train is very nice, clean and modern. The seats were very comfortable with many controls to maximize comfort and exceptional leg room. The train car has massive windows connecting to a glass domed ceiling. Each day we were served with a gourmet breakfast and lunch in the dining room lower level of the car. At the end of each day, we transferred to a bus for a ride to our hotel, until the next morning, where again bright and early, we were brought back to the train for the next phase of the journey. The views along the way (with occasional commentary from the train staff) were breathtaking as we headed through the Rockies during the entire trip. Finally, the Team that hosted us were excellent. Friendly, efficient, with a great sense of humour, these employees were amazing and helped to ensure everyone was having a fantastic time while keeping us well fed and well hydrated with almost any drink you might desire. Overall a great trip and we would recommend anyone to go and experience the Rocky Mountaineer for themselves if they have the chance. I began making hats, birdhouses and then paintings when I was 22 years old and fresh out of University. For the first 10 years of my career I curated and promoted my own art shows in Kingston and Toronto. I have worked with many galleries over the years as well but have always come back to promoting and showing my own work in new and unique ways. I owned a bricks and mortar gallery for 8 years; 4 in Kingston and 4 in Gananoque. At the beginning of the pandemic, I made the decision to shut the doors. In the spring of 2022 I opened a new gallery in the front of our beautiful, century old brick home in the heart of Gananoque. We open the doors to the public on Sundays from 10-2pm and other times by appointment. I have my studio in a separate building, where I pull back the curtain and let people see where I create. Over the years we have had a handful of employees helping us with the gallery. We are currently a team of 3; myself, my husband Jeff Montgomery, who handles customer service and the money side of things, and Kendra Deen, who takes care of marketing and social media… they both help keep me on track! I founded a non profit, The Art of Courage, in 2018 to support the work I have been doing in Africa since 2008. This work requires a much larger team of volunteers, for whom I have such gratitude. Together with the community at large we provide a safety net for 140 orphans and are providing free education for 400 students! The Art of Courage is hosting its first fundraising event since the pandemic on August 31st. I also have a brand new documentary to share with people that was created by the Kingston based production company 'Untold Story Telling’. The film speaks to the work behind the paintings, shines a light on the DR Congo and shows a window into my painting process and why I do what I do. My career as an artist was launched in the Kingston area and has allowed me to have a flourishing career that has reached far and wide across the globe. I am so grateful to have grown up surrounded by such a supportive community! I started Popped Closet Organizing in February 2020 shortly after moving to Kingston after a 4-year stint in Ireland. Over the years, I’ve seen the positive impact that being organized has had on my family, home, and mental health. I know that not everyone shares my passion for organizing, but that we all want organized spaces without feeling completely frustrated and defeated in the process. I realized that I had a unique skill set that could help many others. Popped Closet has recently grown to add a second organizer so we can help more people get their spaces in order. On top of organizing your homes and offices, we also offer a consignment program to help our clients sell the things they no longer need. Sustainability is key when it comes to decluttering, so we aim to help you make responsible decisions about where you donate and we encourage clients to repurpose what they have before bringing in new baskets or bins to keep things contained. We also carry a small assortment of products that will help you stay organized, My personal favourite product is the acrylic turntable, Its versatile, functional and so much fun. My favourite space to organize is a closet, hence the name, but I truly love giving a wardrobe a boutique feel. While I’ve only been in Kingston for 2.5 years I have fallen in love with this city, Kingston is a welcoming community with so many talented and friendly people. I love the parks, the lake, and all of the amazing restaurants. This small but mighty organization thrives thanks to its many volunteers, a dynamic training team and a very dedicated Board of Directors. All who are paramount in the successful execution of the K4Paws Mission to provide trained service dogs and their continued handling support to physically and emotionally challenged persons and their families, assisting them to become more independent in their Southeastern Ontario communities. We have experienced amazing support and developed so many community partnerships that make it possible to train in a wide variety of locations and environments, which is so very important in raising and developing exceptional Service Dogs.
